How to “winter-proof” your hair

Combat dullness, dryness and hat hair — oh my!

You “winterize” your wardrobe in the colder months, pulling out boots, sweaters, mittens and more. If you live in a really cold place, you may winterize your house and your vehicle, too — anything to make winter’s chill a little more bearable. You may find yourself reaching for rich hand cremes and lip balms come winter, but did you know it’s also important to winterize your hair care routine?

Think about it. Winter means dryness; it’s dry outside and it’s dry inside. When the weather cools down, we turn on the heat and that causes even more moisture to evaporate! A lack of moisture means curls can deflate, skin and hair can feel drier than normal and do we even need to mention the static? Oh, the static.

If your trusty summer/fall hair care isn’t working quite as well come winter, here’s how to winterize your routine — courtesy of our Education Manager for Styling, Kathryn Hamernik. Your hair will thank you.

First things first … It may be time to switch up your go-to shampoo and conditioner. If you’ve noticed dullness and dryness, opt for something with more moisture. You may find that lack of moisture is your primary concern in the winter, which is totally normal. Try Dry Remedy shampoo and conditioner for intensely dry hair or Cherry Almond Softening Shampoo and Conditioner for normal to dry hair.

The transition from fall to winter is the best time to start using a leave-in conditioner, if you aren’t already. We love Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair, which helps maintain your moisture level and reduces any static in your hair.

Speaking of static … Is your hair sprouting more static and flyaways than usual? Fight frizz and static with a few key products. Light Elements Smoothing Fluid is key for wintertime frizzies and gives extra shine too.  A stylist-tested tip: spray Brilliant Spray-On Shine on a makeup brush (like our Kabuki brush) and gently sweep it over the top of your flyaways to tame them.

Another pro tip we love? Use Air Control for both staticky hair AND clothing. A little Air Control is always a good thing. To be really precise with application, spray it on a tissue and wipe it down the surface your hair, or spray a small amount on your clothes where you’re experiencing pesky clinginess.

Feeling super dry? Everyone needs a bottle of Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil. You can use it to touch up during the day too; the oil doesn’t sit on the surface of your hair, but actually gets INSIDE the hair to nourish all day long. You’ll get the beautiful aroma of Dry Remedy plus shine and moisture.

Got hat hair? Don’t let flat, lifeless hat hair dissuade you from staying warm with a cute beanie this winter. Zhuzh your hair with Shampure Dry Shampoo at the root to bring back the body once you’ve arrived at your destination and ditched the hat.

Make a date with a masque. Come wintertime, hair masques are always a must, and should be integrated into your routine once a week if not more. Pick something with extra moisture, like the Dry Remedy masque, and use as directed whenever your hair is feeling parched. If you’re someone who shampoos on a daily basis, you can use a masque up to three times a week just to give your hair an added dose of moisture.

What about my dry, flaky scalp? Winter’s chill can exacerbate dry, itchy, uncomfortable scalps. To fight it, make a regular date with the Pramāsana Exfoliating Scalp Brush. The first thing you want to do is remove what’s already there. The rounded tips of the Scalp Brush help you work on the surface of your scalp in gentle, circular motions, and help lift up the debris that your hair traps close to your scalp. After you’ve exfoliated, follow with the Purifying Scalp Cleanser, then your moisturizing shampoo and conditioner as usual. See ya, winter woes!
